Plasmonics is the field which merges photonics and surface plasmon polaritons, hence the name. SPPs are electromagnetic waves that travel along a metal-dielectric interface and they have paved the way to many novel applications such as surface plasmon resonance sensing, surface enhanced Raman scattering, subwavelength focusing to name a few. SPPs also allow the interaction of photonic components with much smaller electronic components.
